's shooting at a connecticut americans. across the country bells rang 26 times at 9:30 in the morning exactly 7 days since the shooting occurred in memory of the 26 people killed at the school. meanwhile, the national rifle association is talking for the first time since the shooting in newtown, connecticut. cbs reporter danielle nottingham reports from washington. >> reporter: the national rifle association faced the media for the first time since the deadly school shooting in connecticut. >> now we must speak for the safety of our nation's children. >> reporter: soon after nra's ceo wayne lapierre started speaking, a protestor held up a sign. after the demonstrator was removed, lapierre said gun control is not the answer. >> the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. >> reporter: the nra is addressing the media here in washington under pressure to soften its stance on gun control. members of the public and the president are pushing for new restrictions on gun sales of a gun control petition on the white house website has received more than 400,000 signatures. >
. in connecticut, we picked up about six inches of snow before it did change over to rain, which it's going to stay as all rain at this point, but we do still have winter storm warnings and advisories posted, now mostly across central and northern new england, where we are still looking at additional snowfall accumulations. and look at that all across northern vermont, areas that want it, especially in the ski resorts, should pick up more than two feet of snow. the purple area is where we should see a foot or more, and areas back across massachusetts only an additional inch or so, especially inland areas where it is still all snow right now. as for wind gusts, the jersey shore, bricktownship, new jersey, barnegat bay, new jersey, picked up wind gusts near hurricane force, 70 to 75-mile-per-hour wind gusts were reported through the night last night. we did also in dover, delaware, pick up a 64-mile-per-hour wind gust. so the winds along the coast have been brutal, but they are weakening right now. we do still have gusts near 50 miles per hour in boston, but all across the rest of the mid-atlantic re

children and teachers and others in connecticut, it is a time for congress to begin a thoughtful dialogue on what we can do to deal with these mass casualty incidences in our country. they have been going on for some time, but perhaps when we see the faces of children, principals, teachers, and others that burns upon our hearts and motivates us to take further action. i want to make sure that, mr. speaker, that congress takes the appropriate action in a thoughtful, willful, determined way, and not jump to quick conclusions as if simple fixes will prevent this from happening. first, to the parents of children across america who are asking questions, mr. speaker, i'd like to offer some of this advice and also in my background as a psychologist, it's important for people to remember this, parents should be asking their children what they have heard about the incident. we should listen to their concerns and their emotions. we should answer their questions with age appropriate information. we should support and comfort and reassure them of their safety at home and school. we should observe and

"starting point" begins right now. >>> well, our starting point, a brutal winter storm battering the northeast and torturing holiday travelers all over the country. here it is on the radar. the system is expected to dump up to two feet of snow on central maine today. six states are under winter storm warnings, pennsylvania, new york, massachusetts, new hampshire, vermont, and of course maine. everyone there could see at least a foot of snow. more than 200,000 customers spanning several states are already without power. more than 1700 flights had to be cancelled yesterday, hundreds more have already been taken off the board this morning and that number is expected to climb. six deaths are being blamed on this system since tuesday, and the threat hasn't passed yet. meteorologist bonnie schneider tracking the storm from the cnn weather center in atlanta. but first inez is live in syracuse, new york, where she's been -- there's a great deal of sno
across new york and long island, across the connecticut sound and really heavy downpours into boston and drive a little further north and it's all snow. that combined with strong wind is making for a very messy day today. so many people are out and about, trying to enjoy holiday time or maybe just heading back to work or to the stores to return gifts. but unfortunately we're seeing heavy downpours into bridgeport, connecticut and once you start heading to upstate new york, it's accumulation. we're talking about a foot or more for upstate new york, 3 to 6 for places like massachusetts, worcester and the berkshires. the pocono mountains will see about 6 inches of snow and into northwestern new jersey you're still looking at snow as well. this is a strong area of low pressure, it will work its way across the northeast. the cold air coming in behind it will help enhance the heaviest snow across the great lakes and extreme northern new england. we're also experiencing some bitterly cold temperatures right here in the south. this morning it's 35 in atlanta, 33 in birmingham. the cold air i
